Environmental Management for Hotels Handbook |
|

Back in 1993 when sustainability was just a long word, rather than a buzz word, a pioneering group of hoteliers came together to form the International Hotel Environment Initiative (IHEI) and develop the Environmental Management for Hotels (EMH) manual. In 2012 that manual – now in its third edition - continues to be the single most significant reference book on sustainability for the hotel industry.
Whilst most sustainability references and tools have come from consultancies and not for profit organisations, EMH was created by the industry, for the industry; born out of a recognition by the hotel industry that it needed to find its own practical solutions to today’s sustainability challenges. The aim was to make practical guidance on environmental matters accessible to any hotel - whatever its size, style or location.
So what does the manual cover? Pretty much everything you could think of! (Natural pest control anyone?!) Starting with sustainability policy and management systems, it moves to offer practical information and advice on the key issues water, waste and energy, as well as wider impacts of food safety, hazardous materials, noise, landscaping and supply chain. Each section starts with an overview of the issue and why it is relevant to the hotel industry and includes handy action plans, guidelines, dos and don’ts as well as a host of invaluable case studies and references for where to go for further information and support. Technical enough to satisfy the Chief Engineer, simple enough to be comprehensible to the non-technically minded.
