In the past decade, Pakistan has continued to face significant challenges and barriers to healthy development of the country’s tourism industry: the great tragedy of 9/11 that significantly reduced tourism arrival in 2001; the horrific earthquake that collapsed the country’s tourism infrastructure in 2005; followed by the Taliban capturing the beautiful Swat Valley and further deteriorating the state of tourism; and the devastating floods that once again wreaked havoc on most of the country in 2010.

IATA Urges Australia to Challenge EW Emissions Trading Scheme

August 26, 2008: “The Kyoto protocol gave the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) the responsibility to deliver a global emissions trading scheme (ETS). As a signatory to Kyoto, Australia has a responsibility to defend it," said IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani in a speech to the Australian National Aviation Press Club in Sydney. "That means challenging Europe on its unilateral ETS. What right does Europe have to charge an Australian plane flying from Asia to Europe for emissions over Afghanistan?" asked Mr Bisignani. "Anything that makes an Australian vacation disproportionately expensive is an incentive for tourists to go elsewhere. To maintain a level playing field, we need to keep focused on global solutions.”

June 27, 2008: Applications for the 2009 PATA Foundation grants are now open. Every year, the Foundation awards grants to practical grass-roots projects that contribute to sustainable tourism growth in Asia Pacific. The Board of Trustees is also seeking contributions to the 18th Silent Auction in the form of travel products, gift items, and travel-related services. All contributions are welcome.
