Dispatches From The Field: Louise at the WTM in London
On November 9, 2012, Chief Technical Officer Dr. Louise Twining-Ward attended the World Responsible Tourism Day in London joined by Keith Richards, Executive Director of Sustainable Travel International UK/Europe, and Marilyn Larden, VP European Operations.
Since its introduction five years ago, WTM's World Responsible Tourism Day, in association with UNWTO, has drawn large audiences in recognition of the leaders and innovators in the field. Presenters and attendees demonstrated the power of tourism to change lives and protect biodiversity one business and one destination at a time. For Sustainable Travel International, the event was a great reminder of the importance of our mission and vision.
For Louise, this year was particularly important. Among the winners of the Responsible Tourism Awards was Lucky Chhetri, Owner of 3 Sisters Trekking Company in Nepal. Two years ago, Louise profiled the empowerment work of Lucky Chhetri in the UNWTO Global Report on Women in Tourism. For the first time, the company successfully enabled women to gain employment in this lucrative field. To do so, they have had to break down some entrenched gender stereotypes.
Lucky noted: “Being a woman and running a business is tough. People see you differently. You need to be determined and clear on your vision and mission so that nothing stops you.”
Louise added: “It was such an honor to finally meet this brave woman, knowing her struggles, sharing her story, and laughing together at her success.”
