Dispatches From The Field: Keith in the Maldives

Sustainable Travel International’s VP of International Development, Keith Dokho travelled to the Maldives last month to assist the Government of Maldives with the development of their Fourth Tourism Master Plan.  Sustainable Travel International was part of a larger team working with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) supported by a coordinated effort between the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme.  The overall objective of the assignment was to strengthen national and local capacity for tourism sector policy, destination planning, human resource development, and management.

Sustainable Travel International contributed analysis and proposed strategic actions relating to business development and economic planning. It identified ways to incentivize investment into the sector thus increasing access to finance for previously excluded individuals and businesses. Sustainable Travel International also recommended strategies to reduce economic leakages from the tourism sector, and enhance economic benefits to local communities providing them with resilient livelihoods based on tourism.

The plan is being reviewed by MOTAC and is anticipated to be finalized and released by the end of the 2012 calendar year.
